The original Downton Engineering Works had  it's own Social Club back in its golden era - known as DEWS (Downton Engineering Works Social-Club ).

The world renowned business finally closed it's doors in 1976 & ex employees scattered far & wide so it was a massive feat to get as many as possible back together in one place for the initial reunion in 2006.

From the success of the reunion Steve Harris initiated the reforming of the DEWS club (he was a member of the 1960s work's club).   Steve was also a long time employee completing his apprenticeship at Downton Engineering in the 'Experimental Race Shop' - building engines and spending many hours driving Daniel Richmond on road tests.

2008 saw the first Downton Classic Car Show gaining interest from all over the country.  As the Mini was such a big part of Downton history Steve got to work rounding up enthusiasts to hold a 50th Anniversary weekend event at Gurston Down Hillclimb.  This very popular event included demonstration runs and charity rides up the hill.

From that day on: Steve and a handful of keen members who had the drive and ambition to keep the Spirit of Downton alive planned the Speed Championship. Steve had lots of good contacts in motorsport and persevered in getting event invitations to some of the finest sprint and hillclimb venues around the country.

In 2017 the Club was rebranded as the Downton Motor Club.
